Consumer Product Safety Commission

Whether you are a US-based manufacturer or an importer of consumer products, Federal Agencies such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) require that you conduct appropriate testing to ensure the safety of your products. This is especially true with regard to high risk items such as children’s products (including toys), whereby specific requirements have been established. Owing to the criticality of the safety testing of children’s products, only those laboratories which are accepted by the CPSC and are listed on the CPSC website may conduct such testing. In order for a laboratory to earn the acceptance of the CPSC for testing children’s products, a testing laboratory must be ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited, and must also meet the strict acceptance criteria established by the CPSC.

Protecting the Public

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with the responsibility of protecting the public from potentially unsafe products which fall under their jurisdiction. With the enactment of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in 2008, the CPSC has been provided with new regulatory and enforcement tools which greatly enhance their authority and ability to ensure the public’s safety.

When looking to launch a new consumer product, whether manufactured in the US or imported from offshore, its safety must be assured through testing which has been conducted by a competent laboratory such as CPTC. Although a manufacturer’s internal laboratory may be permitted to conduct certain safety testing, the great majority of safety testing is conducted by independent laboratories where the uncertainty of testing bias is removed.
